Looking for Sustainability ideas

I thought I find a way to keep costs down while still trying to stay eco-friendly. Trying to keep striving for sustainability. This a record of that journey.

Sometimes blunt and straight forward then sometimes sarcastic

It is that time a year again!

Spring! Spring brings warm days and cool evenings.  And things start to grow like the weeds in your yard.  But did you know that the dandelion once was a wanted "weed" or should I say herb that people would trade for? They would be a prized item.

Dandelion is rich in many nutrients calcium, chromium, iron, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, potassium, sodium, selenium, and zinc. It is a good herb to use as a diuretic. Dandelion has been found to stimulate mucus membranes, sooth the digestive tract, stimulates digestion, absorb toxins from the bowel, and cleaning the kidneys and liver. Careful it also acts as mild laxative.

I have not seen studies to back this up most sites just stating that it is being tested and the results are indicating to have a possible effect ..... To help lower the bad cholesterol and increase good cholesterol. Helps strengthen the heart and prevent strokes. Help with diabetes. Protection from cancer, including breast and prostate cancers. I don't know if all that is true but it can't hurt if you have these issues to deal with. AS always CHECK with your DOCTOR before using a herb if you have any these conditions or any health conditions. If you have hay fever you maybe not want to try dandelion leaves for the possible allergic reaction.

Eating the Dandelion Leaves:

Young leaves of the Dandelion are the tastiest. Dandelion is only pleasantly bitter if you eat the early spring tender leaves. When the leaf get older the center rib gets tough and very bitter. You can try to blanch the leaves but I found them still to bitter. It is best to tear into pieces, rather than cut, to keep the flavor. Like lettuce
Mix into spring mix salads. Hey even the bagged lettuce mix has the dandelion leaf. I have a friend that is allergic to the leaf and we went out to a nice restaurant and they had dandelion leaves in the salad.
Dandelion can be steamed, added to stir-fries and many other dishes which call for greens or spinach. Can add to spinach dishes with the spinach.

Something else I found was that you could even make a delicious sandwich. I haven't done this but I thought I pass it along..... To make a dandelion leaf sandwich just lay the leaves between slices of bread and butter and sprinkled with salt. Add a little lemon-juice and pepper for flavor.

Dandelion leaves can be used in facial steam, as well as face packs. It is good for skins issues like acne, eczema, psoriasis.

Other parts are used also:

The root is also used as a coffee substitute. Sometime mixed with coffee to help give it a better taste. Of course it is roasted just like coffee beans.

The flowers are used to make dandelion Wine.  I never tried or tasted dandelion wine but my parents said it was good, but a pain ti make.

… A man can let his wife know he loves her by giving her a dozen large roses,
while his small grandson can do the same with a fistful of dandelion flowers!

Sun Crystals.. Have you tried them?

I saw the ad for Sun Crystals and thought wow I wonder what they are like. I found on the Sun Crystals site a form for a free sample!

Get your free sample from Sun Crystals here!

With the latest craze of diet drinks and energy drinks containing sucralose I had to research the ingredient. The kids are drinking those drinks. Yea they knew my next move.

We know the danger of aspartame. the chemical can attach the brain tissues and blood supply causing neurotoxin havoc.. Gives me a huge migraine. That nasty after taste.

Studies have found that sucralose can cause weight gain, disruption of sleep patterns, sexual dysfunction, increases in cancer, decrease in birth weight. Weight gain? Gee I thought that people trying to lose weight use that product. It is also found to increase your appetite! You want to eat more not less.

Stevia on the other hand is all natural made from the stevia plant. I guess the only down side is price. Like most sugar free items it will be more per pound. But might be nice for something to stick in your purse or pocket for a safe alternative when needed.

Free software....

I found a great site called Giveaway of the Day. Software that is absolutely free. That means – not a trial, not a limited version – but a registered and legal version.  It will be a full 24 hours that you can download the software of the day. Then it will remain on the site and you can add your reviews and comments at any time. Or even check out reviews to see if this is a software you would like to purchase. You get updates, information and special offers from the companies.   It like when bloggers review items.  It brings people to the companies site and free advertising for their company. If you like a free download, you might get other programs from their site.  Word of mouth advertising is a growing popular idea online.

Ok I haven't downloaded anything yet because I got there a day late for a program I would like...  wouldn't ya know?  But I thought I have to bookmark this! While looking around I found a button for their site.  Ok better yet I could post a blog sending people to the site... I will be remind of the site when I work on my blog........

Check them out... oh also if you have a gamer in the family there is the Game Giveaway of the Day.

Summer cook outs

It been awhile since I was a girl scout leader but I miss the camp outs...

We made solar cookers out of pizza boxes.
Cut the top one inch border around three sides (the part by the box leave attached
Keep the top and cover the opening you just cut with a cooking bag on the inside.
We used packaging tape
Line the inside bottom with black construction paper
Cover that with heavy duty foil
Cover the lid (that faces the open box-the part you cut) with heavy duty foil.

Close lid when baking, have the flap that is cover with foil propped up with a stick

We did English muffin pizzas, corn chips with cheese and chili, s'more's

I always wanted to make a bigger solar oven but they didn't like waiting for their food!!
I found a wedsite Solar Cooking Archive Reflective Box Solar oven . I just might make that one of these days when I get bored.

Carolina Pad Give away- Go green fro back to school

At Clueless_Momma's Guessing all the way site she has a great give away just in time for back to school. Hey some of the schools in Cleveland start next week.
Carolina Pad has a green line the Sasquatch Collection Notebooks and dividers have made out of recycled paper. That is 80 % of the paper is recycled product. Pencil clutches are polyvinyl free.

Ok my first thought was that of many green companies that the only I would be able to get these notebooks was to order on line. Nope there are at many popular stores in my home town and your hometown. Places like Target, Staples, Wal-Mart, K-Mart and Walgreens. Yes one Idea book is on my shopping list.

Plus check out the other product line called the Kendall Kollection . It may not be green but it does have a big heart. The line was developed for the 2 year old cousin one of the signature designers that was fighting leukemia. It helps raise funds and awareness for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.
The cousin luckily is now 6 and is in remission.

So check out Guessing all the way to enter for a Carolina Pad giveaway.
Good Luck!!!!
