Smashing Great idea

So when I was younger we had these books that we would cut and glue pictures and stuff into. We called them scrapbooks. We glue in our pictures, notes, report cards, newspaper clippings and so much more. We write in bold letters, silly sayings and sometimes not so nice words... Drawing silly things or adding pictures from magazines and stickers....  NOW the papers and they ideas that has taken off is so amazing!  It very interesting to see the different  ways people do this creative way of remembering things...... The charms that you can add to the pages.  Plus things like  scissors for beautiful edges and hole punches....

I like this video because it kinda has a catchy little tune and nicely moving little dittoes to keep you watching.

BUT it is a commercial for the product a smash book but you can make one from a old notebook.  Strangely I have a few around the house.  And I have made this type of smash book from don't hate me but a old book.... The old book didn't work to well seeing the binder couldn't take all the pressure.

Spring cleaning

I do spring cleaning by getting rid of clutter. Cleaning out closets and cupboards.  I have 3 boxes already of stuff in my mud room waiting on going to Goodwill. Stuff that has been connecting dust in my kitchen was the first to go.

I had a couple days off and just got bored with the TV and the net. Restless I guess. I was going crazy with the things  I use being too high to comfortably reach.  With my new found love of baking and cooking from scratch, my mixer being on the top shelf wasn't  working for me.  Seeing how I only stand about 5 feet tall... it was getting to be a chore to get what I needed out.  So I rearranged the cup boards finding things I forgot I had and really never used....  Into the boxes things went. Really don't need a blooming onion plastic thing. A ugly punch bowl hand me down, that I used to hold smaller stuff I never use, but did find my potato masher in there. I have been looking for that for months!! LOL

I have room at the top of my cupboards now for storage of things that I get in bulk. Carry and go things.  And those egg holder thing that I only use for Spring holidays...  Plus my storage containers are neatly stacked.. Yea if you ever saw that commercial of the plastic containers flying out and knocking down that woman I felt like my containers could do that at any minute... I have a few left from before I said I would cut down plastic (why not use them but replace them if damaged with glass when I need to). Plus they are a recycle code 5 meaning no BPA and light weight for lunch bags. So they stay. Better in my kitchen then the land fill. 

I found this beautiful stainless steel platter awhile ago and when I found it in my cupboard I noticed 2 small rust stains.. OH NO!! I really don't want to get rid of it... I put it on the table thinking I could maybe cover the platter with a tea towel  or something  when serving from the platter.  It kinda bummed me out.  It has these very delicate designs around the edge.

So when I moved to my bedroom to clean up clutter I noticed my dresser with many things just thrown on there and it hit me! I could use that beautiful  platter on my dresser.  I could use finger nail polish for the rust spots.  Maybe if I can find some... I really can't stand the smell and it is full of toxin ingredients..  But the simplest thing I did was place the candle holder and the black goodie case over the spots.  You can't see them, but you can see the designs in the platter.  Plus I love the look with my wrought iron candle holder.   I give to goodwill but I also shop there! I know I feel kinda classy with my beautiful dresser now... Plus I got to keep my platter that I really like and keep stuff out of the landfill
Not bad for being bored one afternoon!!

Bisphenol A (BPA)) is the latest buzz word to reduce the use of plastics in our daily lives. BPA is a hormone-mimicking chemical and is know for being a endocrine disruptor. It is also being said to aid in obesity, because the chemicals are changing the body’s metabolism. Back in the 1930 they worried that BPA was hazardous to humans but just lately the outcry of many consumers concerned over the amount of BPA in baby products. This is including the baby bottles. In turn has brought to light a new movement for BPA free items. With big bright stickers on the package stating BPA FREE...

With thinking of reducing the amount of plastic in my life I began to notice just how much is in my home. AND at work......  packages for many items I buy, the cooking, eating and baking items I use. I know that plastics with the recycling arrow with the number 3 and 7 contain BPA. 1,2,4,5 and 6 do not. #5 plastics are among the safest for not leaching BPA.  But many bowls, slotted spoons and etc don't have the wonderful recycling arrow so how do I know what this stuff is made out of.....

Plastic bags and plastic are dangerous to animals. I posted a power point blog post last year with pictures of animals encased in the plastic. The oceans have floated plastic debris  called the North Pacific Gyre that are as big as Texas and nature can't destroy it. So how is my body? I remember seeing Chris Jordan's Midway Message from the Gyre (warning not for younger viewers rated R in my book) pictures of albatross chicks that stomachs where full of plastic and how as the animal decayed the plastic did not...... Haunting.  Really haunting. 

Then I look at the pits in my plastic turner and spoon. Ok I have to get rid of these...  I have to.  I can just picture some photographer shooting picture of my family with pieces of cheap plastic ware chips in their bellies......  Ok not really but did wonder if the ocean, animals or anything can't break down the plastic what the heck is that doing to my family.  Of course they know me especially when I feel I must protect them.  

Well just like the post I do read to much!!  I started to feel the inch to replace many of my cooking items with not plastic. It was a burning inch. I had to fix this for my family.

First stop was Deals.  I got 2 mixing bowls:  one huge the other one was smaller.  I told the girls that the in-between size  projects use the casserole bowls, they say ok great idea! Plus they had a slotted spoon, a cookie turner (it was so cute), a serving spoon, a ladle  and clips for packages that where steel. YEA!  Under ten dollars. YES!

Miss Animal Rights needed some undergarments and will not get them from a resale shop. Ok I say I understand and yes we get undergarments new.  So I went looking at the cooking section. I found measuring spoons and cups for a good price,  I tease the girls that the strainer was next time and they talked me into this time.  "it's a good price." they said.  Then  told me "you know it will drive you crazy every time one of us use the old plastic one.............. " So I got it. Ok again under 10 dollars. Yea!!

My collection of shiny steel and ok a handle has plastic.  Shiny... pretty safer for my family I feel better now.....  But still wonder if giving my old plastic ware to Good Will is a bad thing......

I do read to much!!

My poor four legged companions are confused! Seeing how I read online that BPA plus 42 chemicals that were 5 times higher levels that are found in humans. This more likely to damage our pets like our babies or elderly. I was reading some info on Pets for the Environment and came across this info. I made me so crazy that I had to go out and get new food and water dishes for my animals. My four legged babies. I took away their plastic dishes the ones they considered their own! Well the dog was the most upset, he keep looking at his red bowl and then whining. Well we did tell him we had something for him and when he looked in the bag was not very happy there was NO TOY.

It is a known endocrine disruptor; damaging the endocrine system which regulates metabolism, growth, development, puberty, tissue function and also helps with determining mood. That's one reason why I don't microwave foods in plastic and cool my foods before placing them in freezer containers to freeze. PLUS why you should keep old plastic containers for food. Plastic dishes can get scratched and hind all kinds of nasty things in the little grooves. That the kitties can get a condition called kitty acne. Bumps around their face. Our cats have these bumps at the neck, we thought they where from the fleas, like bite that scabbed over. But as I watched Old Princess drink from the mudroom water-dish and noticed that those bumps are right where she leans on the water-dish to drink! I decided that I had to get new water dishes right then. Plus the dog has these bumps too. These scratches can hold bacteria, fungus and germs. Not good for anyone!

So it was late when I was reading this and said I have to get new dishes for my animals. I began to look on line for sales. I saw a add for melamine food dish. I thought to myself, melamine, melamine that sounds familiar. After googling melamine I found out it the stuff that is often combined with formaldehyde in floor tiles, kitchenware, fire retardant fabrics cleaning products, fertilizers and pesticides. That in 2008 killed 6 children and hospitalized 150,000 year after it was added to milk to increase its apparent protein content. Baby formula included. Some children may have life-long chronic kidney problems. I remember that and I also remember that before the baby formula that pets where dying from the same exposure! Yep the recall of pet foods, was due to melamine poisoning. Exposure to melamine in the right amounts (is any exposure acceptable?) can cause kidney failure and death. AND they still sell pet dishes made with this stuff and even tableware! They have found some tableware leach considerable amounts of melamine! And we place our food on it. Our four legged family member eat everyday from it.......

Our animals are showing the effects of this exposure. There has been a growing number of hyperthyroidism in cats
cancer in dogs. The top three are fire retardant chemicals, teflon non-stick coating and plastic exposure. I don't use teflon cookware any more after learning the teflon flakes off and we eat these flakes, poisoning our food. I have hard ionized cookware that cleans even better than telfon even burnt on foods, just soak for a while and wash!

So I had to go get some shinny new bowls for my pets. I found a ceramic cereal bowl that was a mis-matched bowl that didn't really fit with the other bowls and that is the cats food dish now. And a larger flat bowl for the mudroom water dish. the dog got a nice side shinny stainless steel bowl with paw prints on the side. Plus we got a big water dish that holds 3 quarts of water. Whew.......I feel better!
