Looking for Sustainability ideas

I thought I find a way to keep costs down while still trying to stay eco-friendly. Trying to keep striving for sustainability. This a record of that journey.

For our babies

A true reason to remove the toxins for your home, your children. EPA, carcinogens average 10 times more potent for children than adults. When many items in our homes contain toxins, like formaldehyde and 1,4-dioxane in their soaps, shampoos and bubble bath they are at a great risk. Adults will eat 1/40th of their weight where a child will eat 1/10 of their weight in carcinogens.  scary see how many manufacturers including Johnson and Johnson have know that formaldehyde and 1,4-dioxane cause cancer! And it still in their products.  Japan and Sweden have already ban these ingredients from personal care products, yet her in this country we still find them on sale at the local store.  On April 29, 2009, Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.) introduced the Safe Baby Products Act for the Food and Drug Administration to investigate and regulate hazardous contaminants in personal care products , yet the FDA has not done anything.........  Read more about this horror at Campaign for  Safe Cosmetics.   There is many anti-bacterial, anti-microbial or disinfectant cleaners, sprays and even toys. To see the commercials, we need these  anti-bacterial, anti-microbial or disinfectant cleaners to make everything clean.  These cleaners kill both beneficial and harmful bacteria.  The chemical Triclosan which give these products the anti-bacterial qualities  is be thought to weakening of the immune system,  decreased fertility,   altered sex hormones,  cause birth defects, and is a carcinogenic. Studies  have shown that these cleaners can help make super bacteria and germs.  Just like the anti-biotic resistant infections.

33% of the personal-care products on sale in the USA are known to cause cancer and they keep them in our products.  The USA has banned only 10 ingredients in the European Union they have banned 1100+ products.   The European Union test most ingredients where the states have only tested 11%.
Many ingredients that are on sale here but ban in the European market are:
mercury(said to cause autism),  parabens  (has the prefixes methyl-, ethyl-, butyl-, or propyl.),
lead acetate (the stuff we use to remove finger nail polish) formaldehyde (used in dead people),
petroleum distillatesParadichlorobenzene (a strong pesticide),  ethylacrylate,  coal tar, Phosphoric acid (used in fertilizers),  dibutyl phthalate, Turpentine (the strong smelling stuff that removes paint),  Fragrance (which can cause allergies and alergic reactions), Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, Toluene and Xylene

  1. What about the formaldehyde that isn't coming from personal care products? The single biggest exposure that any person will have to formaldehyde in the home is from the air we breathe while inside the homes. What about writting an article on the sources that contribute the most to the formaldehyde. This would be the fiberglass insulation in the exterior walls, laminate flooring, furniture, closet organizers, doors, cabinets, molding.

If anyone is concerned about their child's and/or their own health, they should start by addressing the biggest issues first. The good news is anyone can test their indoor air the same way Sierra Club did the initial FEMA trailer screening. They used passive acs badges for formaldehyde. Cost is $39 including the analysis. Far cheaper than a cost of a trip to the doctor.
